Obituary of Edgar R. Norton

Olean – Edgar R. “Ted” Norton Edgar “Ted” R. Norton of 713 Green Street passed away after a long time battle with Parkinson’s Wednesday December 2nd, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving wife and family. Ted was born in Granville, NY on March 15th, 1928. He was the son of Hiram S. and Sarah Cary Norton. On July 4th, 1952, in the Wellsville United Methodist Church he married his loving wife, Nancy A Dickinson who survives. Ted was a 1946 graduate of Glens Falls High School. He continued his education at Fredonia State University and Potsdam University and received a Master’s in Music Education. Ted was the coordinator of Music Education at Houghton College for 37 years and retired in 1993. He also taught woodwind instruments. He was a long-time member of the Olean First Baptist Church where he also sang in their choir. Ted enjoyed singing and was a member of the Olean Barber shoppers and Salamanca Barber shoppers. In 2012 he was awarded the Barber shopper of the Year from the Seneca Land District. He was a member of the Corduroy Quartette and enjoyed square dancing. Surviving with Ted’s loving wife Nancy are five children; David J. (Lora Beth) Norton MD West Chicago, Illinois, Janet R. Norton of Buffalo, Daniel R. (Penny) Norton of Brockport, Christine E Norton of Olean, and Philip D. (Tammy) Norton of Mason, Ohio, eight grandchildren; Jonathan, Timothy, Joel, Steven, Kendra, Lathie, Saylor, and Hudson, one brother, Arthur Norton of Granville, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his parents, a half brother Maurice Whittney and a half sister Carrie Travers. A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced in the summer of 2022. Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean.
