Daughter of: Peter and Mary Kelly Moore, New York, NY
Sr. Elizabeth Moore entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany on February 2, 1953, was received into the Congregation on August 15, 1953, and professed her final vows on August 16, 1960. As an Allegany Franciscan, Sister lived and worked for 67 years sharing in the life and mission of the Congregation.
Born in Hell’s Kitchen, Betty attended grade and middle schools in New York, NY, graduating from Julia Richman High School in 1951. She attended St. Elizabeth Teacher College in Allegany, NY, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from St. Bonaventure University and a Master of Arts in History from New York University.
Sister began her ministry in the field of education, teaching in Congregational grammar schools in New York, Florida, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In1966, Betty (known then as Sister Maureen Peter) became part of the original faculty at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, NY, where she taught history and was moderator of the cheerleaders. Betty was known and loved by the students for 28 years.
In 1994, she moved to St. Elizabeth Convent in Tampa, FL, where she worked in the Medical Records Department at St. Joseph Hospital for several years. She had a passion for helping those who are poor and volunteered in local soup kitchens. She baked and sold homemade goods to support local families in need and donated money to purchase uniforms for the students at Blanton Elementary School in St. Petersburg, FL.
Sister served as Local Coordinator for the Associate Program of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. She officially retired in 2007 in Tampa and in 2019 was warmly welcomed home to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY
Sr. Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Mary Kelly Moore, two brothers, Robert and Peter and cousins, Sr. Margaret Carmel, SC, and Sr. Marie Baptist, RSM. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as two special cousins, Maureen Gilchrist and Colleen Baxter.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated at a later date in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY at a private service.
