Please share a memory of Sr.Jane to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Born: Berenice Kathleen Kane on July 13, 1929 in Plainfield, NJ.
Died: April 29, 2016 in the St. Clare Community at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY.
Daughter of John and Jennie McDonald Kane of South Plainfield, NJ.
She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1954 and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1961.
Growing up in Plainfield, she attended Grant grade school and in 1948, graduated from North Plainfield high school. She later completed studies at the Institute of Merchandising in New York City and worked in the famous Garment District on Seventh Avenue for several years. A faithful member of her local parish, she highly valued service to others and in 1954, chose to enter the order of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. She continued her education at St. Bonaventure University, Malloy College, Rockville Centre, NY, and Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., earning her B.S. in Education from St. Bonaventure in 1968.
Sr. Jane's various ministries have included teaching, specializing in remedial reading, principal, Director of Religious Education, Pastoral Care and hospital/prison Chaplain. Of all these ministries, which she carried out in Florida, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington DC and Maryland, Sr. Jane preferred that of pastoral care. At Catholic University of America, she was a member of the supervisory staff in the Pastoral Department.
In later years, Sr. Jane's fragile health affected her ability to minister after she suffered a massive stroke and required transfer to the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She made a remarkable recovery under the loving care of the sisters and continued to enjoy various house activities for many years, especially sing-alongs. Although her ability for active ministry was affected by illness, her upbeat spirit and the overall congeniality with which she endured was an admirable example to all who knew her.
Sr. Jane is predeceased by her parents and brothers, John, James and Francis and sisters, Mary, Kathleen, Jeanette, Barbara and Rita Clare. She is survived by several special nieces and nephews.
A Wake Service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2016 in the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2016 in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, New York.
