Frank P. Hirsch of 315 Laurel Ave. Passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in the Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, Fl.
Frank was born on Dec. 18, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pa. and was a son of William Anton and Anna Schluter Hirsch. On Oct. 8, 1948 in Philadelphia he married his wife of 68 years M. Gladys Haring, who survives.
Frank graduated from High School in Philadelphia and he served in the US Navy for two years from Feb. 5, 1946 to Dec. 12, 1947 and he received the WWII Victory Medal. He then went to trade school to be a Pattern Maker. He built houses in the Philadelphia area for disabled Veterans for a number of years. They then moved to the Olean Area and he began working at Clark Brothers. He worked there for over 41 years as a Pattern Maker and retired in Feb. of 1991. While at Dresser he served as the President of the Pattern Makers Union where he was also a Business Manager and worked extensively with relationships between the Union Member's and the Company.
Frank was a member of the Olean First Baptist Church Frank was formerly a very active member of the Olean First Methodist Church for many years. He and his wife traveled extensively throughout the world and in the US and they also enjoyed many cruises. They wintered in Florida for almost the past 20 years. Most of all he enjoyed helping family and friends being a "Handyman" and fixing things. He was a "Jack of All Trades" was always fixing things whether around the house or on the car.
Frank was very involved in Scouting, first a Cub Master then a Webelos Master. He was also involved as a business manager of the Seneca Allegany Highland Council for a period of time. Frank volunteered at the Elk Lick Scout Reserve for many years. He served as President of the Local PTA and then became a two term president of the National PTA Council where he received the PTA Life Membership Award. He also was a two term Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America and he was a current Member of the Olean Elks Club.
Surviving Frank besides his loving wife are three daughters, Lark P. (Stephan) Goodyear of West Kingston, RI, Marygladys S. Wojtanik of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Lisa M. Oakes of Olean; six grandchildren, Amy (Darren) Leigh, Jonah (Stacie) Wojtanik, Kari Wojtanik, Lori (Thomas) Tupper, Michele (Matthew) Bell and Dana (Erika) Oakes; thirteen great grandchildren, Alexander, AnnaSara, Adrian, Julie, Melanie, Jack, Oliver, Amelia, Nolan, Lauren, Christian, Mason, and Klara; and several nieces and nephews.
Frank was pre-deceased by a son, Frank P. Hirsch II in 1979; two sisters, Anne McDonnell and Dorothy Gourley; and two brothers, William Hirsch on Dec. 13, 2013 and Harry Hirsch in 1982.
Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., #646 E. State St., Olean, on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at which time a Memorial Service will be held. The Rev. Millard C. Cook, Associate Pastor of the Olean First Baptist Church, will officiate. Full Military Honor's will be accorded by the Allegany American Legion Charles Herbal Post 892 Ritual Team. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean.
