Newton J. DeGolia, 95, of 2 Sawyer Lane, formerly of 3875 Main St., Hinsdale, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at his home, following an illness. Newton was born April 19, 1921 in Cuba and was a son of Bud and Susan Mae Plummer DeGolia. On May 21, 1949 at the Maplehust Baptist Church, he married his wife of 65 years, Helen M. Bryant, who predeceased him on Jan. 1, 2015. Newton graduated from Hinsdale Central School. He served in the US Army during World War II, from Aug. 4, 1942 to Oct. 19, 1945. Newton worked for NY Telephone Company for 40 years and 13 days, retiring on Friday the 13th in 1983. He was a member of the Western New York Telephone Pioneers of America, where he served as President for a time. Newton was a member of the Hinsdale Methodist Church and the Hinsdale American Legion, and he was a life-long (70+ years) member of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department, where he also served as a former Fire Chief and commissioner. He enjoyed gardening. Newton is survived by one son, John W. (Heather) DeGolia of Ogden; one son-in-law, Jerry Williams of Hinsdale; four grandchildren, John DeGolia of Batavia, Joseph DeGolia of Buffalo, Melissa Williams of Hinsdale, and Joshua Williams of Olean; and two great grandchildren, Madison Williams and Daniel DeGolia. Along with his loving wife, Newton was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Jane Williams in May of 2012; one brother, Arthur DeGolia, and three sisters, Gladys Harmon, Josephine Hinkle, and Rose Schuyler. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be in the Hinsdale Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., #646 E. State St., Olean. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
