Obituary of Wilburn E. Stringer

Wilburn E. Stringer, 97, formerly of 627 North Union Street, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in the Absolut of Allegany Nursing home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Stringer was born Oct. 8, 1914 in Crystal Springs, MS and was the son of the late Virgil and Olivia King Stringer. On July 2, 1938 in Wellsboro, PA, he married his wife of 60 years, Edith A. Lundquist, who predeceased him July 9, 1998. Mr. Stringer grew up on a small Mississippi farm in the depression era and fondly remembered plowing with mules for motive power. He enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the mid 1930's, serving in Mississippi, California and in Pennsylvania, where he met his future wife Edith. Afterwards, he found employment at Clark Brothers/ Dresser Industries in Olean, from which he retired after some 30 years. He was fond of watching football and hockey, especially the Buffalo Bills and the Sabers. He also enjoyed reading and solving mathematical puzzles. Mr. Stringer was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church for over 65 years. Where he taught Sunday School for many years, and was its oldest parishioner. Mr. Stringer is survived by two sons, Wilburn E. (Delores) Stringer of East Aurora, and Arlan R. "Dick" Stringer of Olean; one daughter, Suzanne M. (Graham) Hughes of Cuba; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Ron) Stringer-Plants of Orchard Park; one half sister, Virgie Ann (Robert) Stringer Duncan of Oakland Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Stringer was predeceased by a grandson Richard Stringer. Friends will be received Sunday, August 19, 2012 at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., #646 East State Street, Olean, from 3 pm to 6 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 20, 2012 at the Bethany Lutheran Church at 11:00 am. The Rev. Marie A. Meeks, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at the Allegany Cemetery.
