John S. Simon, Sr, 93, formerly of 813 Bishop Street, passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 in the Pines Health and Rehab Center in Olean. Mr. Simon was born Aug. 23, 1919 in Olean and was a son of Shahean and Mary Thomas Simon. On March 6, 1942 in Louisville, KY he married his loving wife of 68 years, Mary E. Rowley, who predeceased him on May 25, 2010. Mr. Simon served in the US Army during WWII from Feb. 12, 1941 to Nov. 6, 1943 as a proud member of the 1st Armored Division in the North Africa Theatre where he participated in numerous engagements including the Battle of Kasserine Pass where he was seriously wounded. Mr. Simon was employed at the McGraw Edison Company until his retirement in the early 1980s. Mr. Simon was a lifetime member of St. Joseph's Maronite Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing and had served as the Scoutmaster of the St. Joseph's Scout Troop. During the 1940s and 1950s, he was well known in the area as a fast pitch softball pitcher having played in games throughout the Southern Tier, and had traveled with his factory team to play games in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Toronto, Canada. Surviving Mr. Simon are two sons, John S. (Betty) Simon of Erie, PA, and Robert J. (Pamela) Simon of Olean; two daughters, Cynthia M. (Jeffery) Harvey of Olean, and Margie A. (J. Timothy) McCue of Concord, NC; eleven grandchildren, Patricia A. Collins, Jeanette Burleson, Peter J. Simon, James R. Simon, William J. Simon, Kathleen A. Simon, Mary Ellen Harvey, Jeffery Harvey, Kevin McCue, Alison McCue and Michael McCue; and four great grandchildren, Calvin Burleson, Simon Burleson, Shahean Simon, and Alexis Simon. Along with his loving wife, Mr. Simon was predeceased by seven brothers, Fred Simon, Joseph Simon, Edward Simon, George Simon, Mitchell Simon, Mielad Simon, and Thomas Simon. Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, Olean on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 from 2:00 p to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 beginning with a prayer service in the funeral home at 9:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am In St. Joseph's Church, 1126 Walnut St, Olean. The Rev. Anthony J. Salim, Pastor, will celebrate. Burial will be St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany with full military honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion, Charles Harbel Post #892 ritual team. An incense service will be held in the funeral home Friday afternoon at 3:45 pm.
