Lewis F. "Lew" Largent, Jr. of 1609 Seneca Ave. formerly of 930 Crown Street, passed away Wednesday Sept. 11, 2013 at the Olean General Hospital following an illness. Mr. Largent was born Aug. 19, 1923 in McConnellsburg, PA and was a son of Lewis F. and Lattie Jane Fix Largent, Sr. On Oct. 21, 1944 in Frederick, MD he married his wife of almost 53 years, Dorothy J. Baumgardner, who predeceased him Sep. 28, 1997. Mr. Largent served in the US Army from Feb. 28, 1943 to Nov. 20, 1945. During his service he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was know as Sergeant Largent. Mr. Largent taught for the Olean School System, 6th Grade in School 7, 7th & 8th Grade, and Physics in the high school. He was principal for 4 years in School 10 and then 4 years in School 4. Mr. Largent was the principal at East View School in Olean when he retired in 1985. Mr. Largent was very active and he served in many capacities in his churches - First Methodist Church, Christ United Methodist Church, and he was currently attended the Bolivar Methodist Church. He was a member of the City of Olean planning board for a number of years. Mr. Largent was a 50 year member of the Olean Masonic Lodge F&AM #252. Olean VFW and the McConnellsburg American Legion Post #561. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing, skiing, and skeet and trap shooting and he loved his fellow man. Most of all, Lewis was a gifted cabinet maker with an extensive woodworking shop. He enjoyed working on his home and other family members home's as well as many wood working projected for his churches and or the different schools he was at. Lewis is survived by one daughter, Pamela A. (David) Lasky of Olean; his life companion, Marlene I. "Molly" Chapman with whom he lived; three granddaughters, Amanda J. Lasky, Rebecca L. Lasky, & Emily J. Lasky; two brothers, Clair W. (Kathryn) Largent of York, PA, and Harold R. (Mary) Largent of Pasadena, TX; several nieces & nephews; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Largent of Berlin, PA. In addition to his loving wife, Lew was predeceased by one brother, Kenneth Largent on Feb. 6, 2000; and one sister, Beulah Patillo in 1977. Friends will be received on Sunday, Sep. 15, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street Olean, where Funeral Service will be held, Monday, Sep. 16, 2013 at 9:00 am. The Rev. Geraldine Repino will officiate. Friends will also be received on Tuesday, Sep. 17, 2013 at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home in McConnellsburg, PA from 9 am to 11 am, at which time a Military Graveside Committal Service will be accorded by the McConnellsburg American Legion Post #561. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg, PA. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
