Please share a memory of Ariste to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. Ariste Michael Jamesson ("Mike") of 9342 North Shore Rd, Cuba, NY died May 19, 2009 at Strong Memorial Hospital after a short illness. Dr. Jamesson was born in Sayre, PA on July 12, 1921, the only child of Michael and Athena (Kamviti) Jamesson and spent his childhood in Hornell, Owego, and Penn Yan, graduating from Newark High School. He attended Alfred University and graduated from University of Buffalo School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, he immediately entered the Army Dental Corps and served overseas during World War II. Once discharged from the service, he practiced dentistry in Buffalo, Alfred and ultimately in Cuba, NY. On June 22, 1952, in Wellsville, he married Kalope (Pope) Giopulos, who survives. They have resided in Cuba since 1959. As a dentist, his first concern was serving his patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Affectionately known as "Doc" by patients and friends alike, he was happiest spending time with his family, and especially delighted in his grandchildren. After his retirement, he and his wife regularly visited his extended family in Florida. For many years, he made his own wine and enjoyed it with both new and traditional foods. An avid reader, he loved discussing current events. Mike and Pope were lifelong bridge partners and spent many an hour with friends at the tables. Doc was one of the original founders of the Greek Open Golf Tournament which grew from an informal four-person event to one encompassing hundreds. He had a passion for golf, and loved to play different courses. He had been a member at golf clubs in Bolivar, Wellsville, and Allegany Hills. Mike was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, and a former Elk and Mason. He had also been a member of national and county professional dental associations. In addition to his loving wife Kalope, he is survived by his daughter Athena of Rochester; son Michael (Susan Church-Jamesson) and grandsons Matthew, Nicholas and Philip, all of Scottsville; brothers-in-law John (Shirley) Giopulos of Wellsville and Dr. Peter Giopulos of Rochester; sister-in law Anne Giopulos of Syracuse; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Thursday, May 21, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. 24 Genesee PKWY, Cuba, N.Y. 14727 . Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. in St. John's Episcopal Church Wellsville. The Rev. Patrick Cowles from Rochester will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville, NY. There will also be a Memorial Service held in Florida at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Cuba Circulating Library or Cuba Memorial Hospital.
