James E. Monterville, Jr. of 1996 Haskell Road, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Jim was born on April 12, 1941 in Jamestown and was a son of James Edward and Ellen Evelyn Barr Monterville. He was formerly married to Paula Richardson. On Aug. 28, 1971 at the Portville First Presbyterian Church, he married his wife of 46 years, Donna Lee Roberts, who survives. Jim was a 1959 graduate of Portville Central School. He worked, first in the foundry and then in the tool services department at Dresser Rand in Olean starting in 1962 and retiring in 2003, after 41 years. Jim was a referee for football for over 30 years and baseball for over 25 years. He helped build the Olean Little League field in 1970, and helped maintain it for 30 years and sat on the "Big 30" committee for almost 30 years. Jim was formerly a member of the Portville First Presbyterian church. He was also a former member of the Moose, Eagles, Olean & Cuba VFW, and the Sons of the American Legion in Portville, where he served as a Post Commander. Jim earned the Dresser Credit Union "Volunteer of the Year" Award in 2017, an sat on the Supervisory committee until his passing. He was an avid snowmobiler and long-time member of the Enchanted Mountain Snowmobile Club. Jim enjoyed bowling league and traveling, especially his trip to Alaska in 2012. He traveled to 49 of the 50 states. James loved all sports, golfing, and especially the "Bonnies." Two of his favorite sayings were; "He was blessed with a wonderful wife and a wonderful life" and "Nothing could be finer than to be a class of 59er". Along with his loving wife, James is survived by; 3 children, Danna L. (Rick Stromoski) Gauntner of Suffield, CT, Donald F. Gauntner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Mary F. (Brian) Beatty of Olean; 9 grandchildren, Josh, Christopher, Dustin, Paigely, Michael, Francisco, Nicholas, Molly & Joellen; 4 great grandchildren, Lucas & Audrey; 4 stepchildren, Lynn Owens, Amy Titus, Nancy Hale, and John Ferrio. James was predeceased by; a daughter, Denise Calixto on Sept. 5, 2017 and a brother Thom A. Monterville on Oct. 5, 2005. A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State Street, Olean on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at which time a few short stories will be presented, and then the Celebration of his Life will continue at Randy's Fireside Restaurant until 8:00 PM, with all welcome to attend.
