Obituary of Betty R. Childs

Betty R. Childs, of 25 N. Main St. Apt. 8, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center, following a short illness.
Betty was born Dec. 1, 1927 in Alma and was a daughter of George and Florence "Flossy" Tret Quick. On Jan. 1, 1946, she married her husband of 57 years, George W. "Wesley" Childs, who predeceased her on Dec. 15, 2003.
Betty graduated from Wellsville High School in 1945. She worked at several places including ACME, Westons Shoppers City, and Portville Central School for a period of time. Betty and her husband, George were missionaries throughout their lives and then became full time missionaries in 1985 and continued until there retirement in 1992. During that time they traveled to Columbia, South America and to Florida.
Betty was best known for her elaborate wedding cake baking, which she did for about 20 years from the mid 1960's to 1985. She was a member of the Obi Community Church.
Betty is survived by two children, Mike C. (Katherine "Kit" Huebiner) Childs of Cuba, and Nancy S. Marlett of Portville; three grandchildren, Scott A. (Heather) Carlson of Olean, Tania L. (Bill) Wingard of Clarion, PA, and Kelly L. Simon of Portville; nine great grandchildren & Sparky; and one sister, Lucille Dickerson of Belmont.
Along with her loving husband, Betty was predeceased by four sisters, Maggie, Joyce, Wanita, and Mildred; and one brother, Julius.
Friends will be received, today Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State St., Olean, where funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017 at 11:00 am. The Rev. David M. Cook, Pastor of the Obi Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Obi Cemetery.
