Obituary of Monroe Benjamin Bishop

Hinsdale- Monroe Benjamin Bishop “Loving Husband, Father & Grandfather” Monroe Benjamin Bishop, of 3828 Pennsylvania road passed away on Monday, Nov. 14, 2022, at the Pines of Olean. Monroe was born on October 27, 1937, in Hinsdale and was the son of Monroe Benjamin and Rosabell Hamilton Bishop. Formerly married to Carolyn Ann Cornell. On November 21, 1993, at the Hinsdale United Methodist Church he married his loving wife, JoAnn “Jan” I. Moody who survives. Monroe was a 1956 graduate from Hinsdale Central School. Monroe served in United States Marine Corps from Nov. 15, 1956 to Nov. 14, 1959, spending most of his tour of duty in Okinawa. Monroe worked for the United States Government in Washington, DC on computers until he was able to get a job with Xerox in 1965. He received the Neilson Project Award in 1968. He retired from Xerox after 30 years of service. Monroe became interested in the town government and ran for Hinsdale Town Justice in 1994 where he served for 14 years. Then Monroe ran for Hinsdale Town Supervisor and held that position for 6 years. Monroe was a long time member of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church and was able to fill in officiating for the Pastor several times a year at both, Hinsdale and Ischua Churches. Monroe was an active volunteer at the Hinsdale Ischua Food Pantry. For several years Monroe served as Chaplin for the Hinsdale American Legion Post #1434 and was also President of the Hinsdale Alumni Association for several years. Monroe officiated many funerals and performed his 100th wedding this past year. Before moving to Hinsdale, he was a member of the Rose Baptist Church. Monroe was a member of the Portville Masonic Lodge #579. Beside his loving wife, Jan, Monroe is survived by his three sons; Donald (Donna) Bishop, Douglas Bishop, and David Bishop of Boulder City, NV; grandchildren Troy, Tyrus and Andrew; step-son, Keith (Lisa) Zimmerman of Fairport, NY; step grandchildren, Ryan and Isabelle Zimmerman, and a sister, Rosabell Bishop Hamilton. Monroe was predeceased by two brothers, Richard O. Bishop and Eugene A. Bishop; and two sisters Hazel Bishop Dutton and Genevieve Bishop Russell. Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, from 3:00-6:00pm. Members of the Portville Masonic Lodge #579 will conduct a Masonic Lodge Service at 5:30pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19th at 10:00am at the Hinsdale Community Church (formerly the Hinsdale United Methodist Church) 1420 Flannigan Hill Road, Hinsdale. The Rev. Dennis J. Stack, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Hinsdale Cemetery.
