Obituary of Frances Monica Sheehey

SR. FRANCES MONICA SHEEHEY, OSF Born: Frances Monica Sheehey, September 28, 1924, Brighton, MA Died: January 2, 2022, St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY Daughter of: James and Agnes Ryan Sheehey, Waltham, MA Frances entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany on October 4, 1948, was received into the Congregation on August 15, 1949, and professed her final vows on August 16, 1956. As an Allegany Franciscan, Sister lived and worked for 73 years sharing in the life and mission of the Congregation. Frances attended grade and middle schools in Brighton, MA, and graduated from Brighton High School. Before entering the Congregation, she attended Fisher School of Business in Boston, MA. Sr. Frances received her education at St. Elizabeth Teachers College, Allegany, NY, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education from St. Bonaventure University. She furthered her education taking graduate courses in the field of Education at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, NY. Sister’s 20 plus years of ministry in education began while teaching in Congregational schools in Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New York, where she was principal of Holy Cross School in Callicoon, In 1967, she became a missionary to Bolivia, SA, where she served as principal and teacher at Carmen Pampa, Bolivia. In 1980, Sister began working as a secretary at Babson College in Wellesley, MA for 12 years. After leaving Babson College, she remained in Massachusetts for the next 15 years caring for her sister and volunteering as a parish secretary at St. Margaret Parish in Buzzards Bay, MA. Sr. Frances was warmly welcomed home to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in 2008 and continued her volunteering at St. Bonaventure Parish, Allegany as an office assistant and attending to the clerical needs of the Sisters at the Motherhouse. She formally retired at age 94 in 2019. She is predeceased by parents, James and Agnes Sheehey; three brothers: George, James and William; three sisters: Rita Keating, Mary Glennon and Helen Mitchell; cousins: Rev. James Coffey, Rev. John Coffey and Rev. Daniel Keefe. She is survived by two special nieces, Susan Dolan and husband Jack and Francine Canfield and husband, John, as well as several nieces and nephews. A wake service will be held at 6:30PM on Thursday, January 6th in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held there at 10:00AM on Friday, January 7th followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
