Ervin �Leo� Vanderhoef of 215 North 14th Street, passed away Monday, November 17, 2014 at the Olean General Hospital, following an illness. Leo was born May 5, 1945 in Wellsville and was the son of Ervin and Gladys Cornelius Vanderhoef. On September 26, 1992, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Olean, he married his wife of 22 years, Cynthia A. Johnson, who survives. Leo graduated from Alfred-Almond High School in 1964. He was an excellent athlete and lettered in track, soccer, and baseball. He was a star basketball player setting many school records. Leo was recently inducted into the Alfred-Almond Central School's Sports Hall of Fame. He served in the United States Marine Corps from June 30, 1966 to June 28, 1968. After his service, he worked for Buffalo Crushed Stone in Franklinville as a lab technician, for many years. Leo was a member of the Eagles Club Aerie #616, and was past president several times. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and served on the church council. Leo enjoyed sports but he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play. He was an avid bowler and a golfer. Most of all, Leo was a family-centered man and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Along with his loving wife, Leo is survived by eight children, Erick (Carrie) Vanderhoef of Florida, Ingrid (Gerri) VanTreese of Almond, Danielle (Jesse) Minges of Olean, Stephanie Vanderhoef of Hinsdale, Kimi (Jeff Cook) Vanderhoef of Portville, Kevin (Emily) McClelland of Allegany, Karl (Tracie) McClelland of Olean, and Traci (Mike) Foster of Olean; eighteen grandchildren, Amanda Vanderhoef, Kaila and Rachel Meador, Brandon VanTreese, Tavien & Latrell Kemp, Kailyn & Hannah Vanderhoef, Braden Vanderhoef, Madison, Molly, & Sydney McClelland, Matt, Ryan, and Maggie McClelland, Caleb, Blake, and Jacob Foster; and one sister, Carolyn (Jerry) Hominga of Michigan. Leo was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Margo Goodridge; and a brother, Alan Vanderhoef. Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street Olean, on Thursday, November 20, 2014 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, November 21, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Bethany Lutheran Church, #6 Leo Moss Drive, Olean. The Rev. Marie A. Meeks, Pastor of the Bethany Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be at the Allegany Cemetery with Full Military Honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion, Charles Harbel Post #892 Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church #6 Leo Moss Drive, Olean, New York 14760 or to the Rehabilitation Center, #1439 Buffalo Street, Olean, New York 14760.
