Maynard K. Thompson, 80, of Colonial Village, formerly of Olean, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 in the intensive care unit of Olean General Hospital, following a brief illness. Born on August 22, 1933, in Mt. Morris, he was a son of the late Leland and Ruth (Jaggard) Thompson. He married the former Alta M. Wixson on January 21, 1956 who predeceased him on April 16, 1999. He later married Elaine (Thalheimer) Butler who survives. Maynard was a graduate of Nunda High School. He served with the U.S. Navy from April 1, 1953 to March 26, 1957. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service on Oct. 1, 1992, after 29 years of service. During his retirement he enjoyed working at Primo Limo and volunteering for the Olean and Allegany Public Schools as a crossing guard, Meals on Wheels, Cattaraugus County Tourism, and Olean General Hospital. He was a member of the New Apostolic Church for 49 years. For 25 years he served as a faithful priest and was responsible for the members in the Olean, Steamburg, and Cattaraugus congregations. In addition to his wife, Maynard is survived by seven children, Gail L. (Ron Mercer) Carucci of Sanford, NC, Vickie (Joseph) Anastasia of Olean, Scot (Tracey) Thompson of Greer, SC, Elaine (Jeffery) Morris of Macedon, Roger Thompson of Niagara Falls, Canada, Holly (Jeffrey) Garland of Kennedy, and Mark Thompson of Olean; One step-son, John (Judy) Butler of Cattaraugus; fifteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, five step great grandchildren; five sisters, Phyllis Burt of Black Creek, Janice (Tom) Carpenter of Shinglehouse, PA, Marilyn Schneider of Greece, Gloria (Joe) Gross of Cuba, and Joni Thompson of Victor; a brother-in-law, Luigi D'Orazio of Grand Island; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife, Alta, Maynard was predeceased by his brother Leonard Thompson. There will be a private visitation only. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, 133 S. Union St., Olean at 1:00 PM. The Rev. Leonard R. Kolb, Pastor of the New Apostolic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery Veteran's Field of Honor, with full military honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post #892 Ritual Team. Flowers are gratefully declined.
