Our sincere condolences to the extended Laine family (especially Marianne! Erick was truly larger than life! He brightened every room he entered and had an ability to engage with everyone in a meaningful and caring manner. His legacy will live on through the businesses he nurtured, the numerous ways he improved his community (both in Olean and in Cuba, NY), the family and friends he loved and the memories we will all carry with us. There is a Finnish proverb that goes something like this... "If vodka, tar and sauna don't help, the disease leads to death." I guess that time had come - but what a life he left for all of us to emulate!

I first met Erick when I was 15 and learned I had been selected to be an exchange student for a one year program and the organization chose me to go to Finland. A neighbor worked at Alcas at the time and arranged for Erick and I to meet since we now had this Finnish connection. He welcomed me graciously to the factory and generously gave me many knives and products to take with me. Fortunately, at that time I was able to safely travel with the cutlery in my packed bags! We were able to meet periodically over the years including a visit to his authentic sauna at Cuba Lake. Sisu is something I learned from the Finnish culture and have embraced it and shared it with my daughter since a young age. He was a great example of Sisu ! He was such a kind, giving, encouraging man and influenced me greatly at that young age. I am grateful to have known him in some capacity. My condolences and thoughts to his family and loved ones. He will be missed. Allison Hendy

Erick was such a caring man. He would come into the Visitors Center and we would only know he was coming because Annie, his little dog, would be running ahead of him. He truly cared about you as he was speaking to you and wanted to know all he could about you. He just made you feel special. He will be truly missed by all of us at Cutco.

The life of Erik was one of unselfishness, community, family and giving. This man always made anyone he met feel special, flashing that trademark smile and twinkle in his eye. We were blessed and honored to have him take time to serve as Best Man in our wedding, making the day even more memorable with his grand toast.
Days of Erik and Terry running miles around the neighborhood or cross country skiing, not in the country, but around the Olean community, are memorable. Erik lived for the outdoors!
He certainly had a way of sharing his grand vision and drawing you in, always with the goal to make the community he called home, better. Our time as partners in real estate ventures brought us many challenges but ultimately provide great satisfaction that we were doing our part to improve housing in Olean.
Erik’s 87 years spent on this planet were dedicated to what life is supposed to be about: giving, adventure, gratitude, loving, and treasuring. Erik excelled at all of these, never wasting a minute.
He will always be a piece of our hearts and souls!
With Deepest Sympathy,
Terry & Donna Grant

Donna -- I have never forgotten learning to cross-country ski with Terry and my father, and then traveling to the Chatauqua Ski Marathon together. Those were some of my favorite times with my dad. Thank you both for your friendship over the years. Kristen Laine

A man I greatly admired. I carried the KA-BAR Marine fighting knife he gave me on the Cutco factory floor in two wars and deployments all over the world, including on multiple parachute jumps. The reason my late wife Debbie and I had a sauna installed was because Erick and Marianne hosted us at Cuba Lake and we had so much fun with Erick that night - including rolling in the snow and jumping in the lake - she insisted we needed a sauna. I even learned some Finnish! Travel Well, Erick.
