It is hard for people to understand what you are going through when you lose a cousin. When you tell people that you lost a cousin people usually ask, Were you close? This is truly kind and much appreciated. I am not offended as I have done it myself. I guess that might be because most people assume cousins are only bonded by blood and nothing else. In our family, our cousins were more like siblings. We were all close in age and grew up when Olean, NY was like Mayberry, USA. We were only a quick bike ride away from each other. At one point we lived in the same house.in a duplex and would sneak through the cellar to see each other. Bobby was there during my annoying kid years. He probably held me as a baby and was forced to babysit. He picked on me during my awkward tomboy years and nicknamed me “Rugged” because I was constantly playing football with all the neighborhood boys. He introduced me to the Beatles (Thank you for that) and played "Horse" with me in our driveway when I needed a break from whatever family drama was taking place. Our families vacationed together, and we watched each other grow up. We became adults together, and we should have reached retirement age together. Bobby was the guy who lightened the dark times with a twinkle in his eye and a reassuring joke.
He married the love of his life and him and Lisa had two amazing daughters who are like the younger sisters I never had. Life changed and I moved away. I regret that distance kept us from seeing each other as much, but the bond was always there. Bobby always told me he was proud of me and the life I lived, even when I was not so sure what I was doing. He loved me and was there with me at my mom’s bedside when she took her last breath. I take some comfort knowing they are together now.
My older brother and sister ran hard with Bobby for many years and we fondly referred to them as the three musketeers. They both are heartbroken and have lost the best friend they ever had.
My heart goes out to his loving wife Lisa and his heartbroken parents who have always been like parents to me. His daughters, Chrissy and Claire- who are putting on brave faces and pretty much holding this family together. I know they will keep his love alive.
Bobby, we shared a trunk load of memories. If I did not cherish those memories, it was only because I was certain there would be a whole lot more. I promise to cherish them now. I will continue to tell your children and your grandchildren the stories of our youth and you will live forever in our hearts.
Rest in peace my dear cousin-
Missy
