Obituary of Sr. Mary Ellen Walsh

Born: Mary Ellen Walsh on March 17, 1927, Everett, MA Died: April 16, 2020, St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY of natural causes Daughter of: Edward J. Walsh, Sr. and Bridget Connolly-Walsh, Malden, MA Sr. Mary Ellen entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany on September 8, 1946, was received into the Congregation on August 15, 1947, and professed her final vows on August 16, 1954. As an Allegany Franciscan, Sister lived and ministered for 73 years sharing in the life and mission of the Congregation. Sr. Mary Ellen attended Belmont Elementary, Lincoln Junior High, Malden High School, and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1946. She attended St. Elizabeth Teacher College in Allegany, NY, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from St. Bonaventure University. She took graduate courses at Boston State College, Boston, MA. Mary Ellen taught elementary grades at Congregational schools in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. She was a religious education instructor and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America. After retiring from teaching in 1985, Sr. Mary Ellen worked as a clerical assistant and office manager at Holy Cross School in Bronx, NY. In 2007, she retired to St. Raphael Convent in West Medford, MA, and in 2010 was warmly welcomed home to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY. Her avocations were knitting Irish sweaters and afghans, cheering on the Boston Red Sox and sharing her Irish heritage. Sr. Mary Ellen is predeceased by her parents and three brothers: John, Edward, Jr. and Anthony. She is survived by a sister, Catherine MacFarlane, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic restrictions, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at the convenience of family members and the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.
