John worked at Battenfield Grease and Oil in North Tonawanda until 1995, when he became disabled.  He was everyone's family mechanic.  John was always fixing his family's and friend's cars.  He and his wife Sarah, moved to Cuba in 1998, to what was once a hunting camp, that he turned into a year round family home.

John enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on tractors, and shooting his guns, but he truly loved his family and his dog "Sarge."

John was a devoted and loving husband to Sarah Collar; a caring father to Elizabeth A. (Alexander) Brown, John R. (Lorri) Collar, and Sarah L. (Brian Blose) Collar. John and Sarah raised two nieces, Debra Wise and Sheila Davis, as their own children. John was always a caring and thoughtful brother to his sisters, Amelia (Edward) Flick and Dixie Dougherty, along with several nieces and nephews. John is remembered as a loving grandfather to Mara Brown, Richard Brown, Brittny Collar, Shayna Collar, Brianna Wise, Bianca Blose, Sebastian (Tyler) Wise, Christopher Blose, Devon Davis, Timothy Connor and Kayla Connor; and a great-grandfather to Jaelynn Roberts and Jaida Roberts.
