Mary was my 7th grade English teacher in Allegany in 1976-77. I recall two things in particular about that class--one short story, The Most Dangerous Game (which was a play on words with a double entendre) The other thing I most took away was a story of I believe her nephew who had died in the Vietnam War. I'd see the Havers grave marker in Allegany Cemetery that I always thought was his. I believe that we also read the poem In Flanders Fields as part of that unit. It was one of the seeds about the horrible consequences of war that has helped me become a public activist and advocate against war and for nonviolent more just solutions--both while a graduate student in Los Angeles and now in the Phoenix area.
