Obituary of Sister Annette Mirco

Antoinette Mirco on January 21, 1918 in Buffalo, NY. Died: March 1, 2014 at Buffalo General Hospital, Buffalo, NY. Daughter of Michael and Anna Louise McGinty Mirco of Buffalo, NY. She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1942 and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1949. Sister Annette attended St. Columba grade school in Buffalo, NY from 1923-31, followed by high school at St. Patrick's and Mt. Mercy Academy, both of Buffalo, graduating in 1935. After joining the Congregation, she began college courses at Medaille College in Buffalo, continuing at St. Elizabeth Teacher's College (now known as St. Bonaventure University) in Allegany, NY, Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, Fordham University in New York, NY, earning her B.S. in Education from St. Bonaventure University in 1959. Sr. Annette pursued graduate studies at Nazareth College and St. Bonaventure University, completing her M.A. degree in Education and Guidance at Villanova University in Villanova, PA in 1965. Sr. Annette taught in the lower grades in Congregational schools located throughout New York and New Jersey and during several assignments, also served as Guidance Counselor. In 1969, she accepted the Guidance position at Arch Bishop Walsh High School in Olean, NY and in the years to follow, was given increasing oversight, first in the role of Assistant Principal and finally, Principal of the school that she grew to love. Following her many years in education, she found a personal calling in pastoral care, serving within many New York parishes, as well as ministering to her own sisters within the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse Infirmary. During this time, she also served as a Sister Visitor, bringing a welcome smile of encouragement to many at St. Joseph's in Niagara Falls, NY. Well into her retirement years, Sr. Annette continued to be of service to her sisters at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, happily volunteering wherever she was needed. Sister Annette is predeceased by her parents, sisters, Alice Carriero, Mary Pinto, Rose Miller, Catherine Mirco and her brother, Louis. She is survived by a nephew, Nicholas Carriero and many grandnieces and grandnephews. A Wake Service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, New York. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. 646 East State Street, Olean, New York.
