Obituary of Sr. John Kevin McNulty, OSF

Born:   Kathleen McNulty on April 3, 1920 in Andover, MA.

Died:   December 4, 2018, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY.

Daughter of Francis Joseph and Mary O’Hare McNulty of St Petersburg, FL.

Sister John Kevin was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1939, and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1946.  Sister devoted herself to the life and Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for 80 years. 

She attended Roser Park and St. Paul Elementary/High Schools in St. Petersburg graduating in 1938.  After entrance into the Congregation, she began her pursuit for education in the field of healthcare.  She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Barry College in Miami, FL and her M.S. in Biology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1955.  Sister received her Master’s in Hospital Administration from St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO.

Sister began her ministry at St. Mary Hospital in West Pam Beach, FL as a Lab Technician for 20 years.  In 1964 she was named the Administrator of St. Clare Hospital in NYC and remained in that position for 12 years.  Sr. John Kevin returned to Florida in 1976 and assumed leadership for the US Southern portion of the congregation for eight years.  For the next nine years, Sister coordinated various outreach ministries in the Tampa Bay area.    From 1993 – 1996, she accepted a position with the Palm Beach, FL Diocese as Vicar for Religious & Diocesan Director of Religious Vocations.  Sister semi-retired from active ministry in 1999 at St. Elizabeth Convent in Tampa, FL and returned to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in 2015 where, in her retirement, she volunteered as assistant to the Archivist. 

Sister John Kevin is predeceased by her parents; a brother, Reverend Msgr. John P McNulty; and a sister, Bernardine Rickling.  She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Patricia McNulty, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Wake Service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2018 in the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, New York.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 10, 2018 in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, New York.
