Obituary of Norma B. Stephan

            Norma B. Stephan, 94, died peacefully in her home on August 20, 2018.  She was born in East Arcade, NY on March 21, 1924, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Clark) Berwanger.  Norma attended Buffalo State Teachers College graduating in 1945.  Her first teaching position was in Hinsdale, NY where she taught 6^th grade for two years prior to her marriage to Stanley E. Stephan, on August 9, 1947.  After a 15 year hiatus to raise a family, Norma resumed her teaching career at Allegany Central School where she taught 5^th grade science for 33 years.  She retired in 1986 but continued to teach as a substitute in the Franklinville School District along with taking courses at BOCES to become a Home Health Aide. She was a member of  The College Club, The New York State Retired Teachers Association, and the Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma

            Norma loved teaching and caring for others, including remembering her many family members and friends with letters and cards on all occasions.  She was a devout member of The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels where she volunteered with the Angel Outreach Ministry.  She regularly cooked and baked for church festivals, the Bereavement Committee for Funeral Brunches and many other church-sponsored events.  Norma was an excellent baker and was best known for her delicious pies, brownies, cakes and cookies. She was equally well known for her canned goods, jams and jellies.

            Norma was predeceased by her parents, beloved husband Stanley, two brothers; infant Leonard Berwanger, Kenneth Berwanger, and two children; infant son Billy Joe, and daughter Sally.

            She is survived by four children; Frank (Mary), George (Denise Drummond), Joseph (Gwynnyth) and Mary Madsen (Soren) along with 10 beloved grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

            Family and friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State Street, Olean, NY on Friday August 24, 2018 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, starting with a prayer service at the Funeral Home at 9:30AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels at 10:00AM. The Rev. David E. Tourville, Parochial Vicar, will celebrate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
