Ernestine W. Smith of 5324 Betty St., Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Whitesville, Cuba, and Allegany, passed away May 23, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family after a courageous fight with cancer.
Ernestine was born January 19, 1938 in Cuba and was a daughter of Ernest and Margaret Huntington Witter. On Nov. 4, 1956, at the Cuba First Baptist Church, she married her husband and friend of 58 years, Cecil L. Smith.
Ernestine graduated Cuba High School in 1954 and Hornell Business Institute. She was a hardworking devoted wife and mother, working beside her husband on the family farm in Whitesville. Ernestine was a member of the Cuba First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served as the church secretary for a number of years. She Ernestine was a 4-H Leader for 14 years and was the leader of the Zephyrhills TOPS Chapter. She enjoyed baking, needlework, and making her famous candy treats. She was devoted to her family.
Along with her loving husband, Ernestine is survived by one son, Thomas David (Donna) Smith of Round Hill, VA; three daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Rose (Terrence) Smathers of Hedgesville, WV, Patricia Ann Levine of Caledonia, and Sue Ellen (Scott) Randall of Durham, NC; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, David (Sandy) Witter of Auburn; five sisters, Esther (Harry) Hardman of Cuba, Ruth Tarbox of Longwood, FL, Dora Mullen of Maryland, Gertrude Harrer of Livonia, and Beth (Gordon) Slocum of Winter Haven, FL; and several nieces & nephews.
Ernestine was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Ann Smith; and a son-in-law, Mark Levine.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Cuba First Baptist Church on Friday, June 12, 2015 at 11:00am. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, Pastor of the Cuba First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Gulfside Hospice, 2061 Collier Parkway, Land O'Lakes, Florida 34639.
