Born: Mary Teresa Dorr on June 27, 1930 in Fall River, Mass.
Died: Thursday, October 1, 2015, at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY.
Daughter of John G. and Bridget Higgins Dorr of Fall River, Mass.
She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1949 and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1956. Sr. Maureen faithfully lived the Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for 66 years.
Growing up in Falls River, and later in Providence, R.I., Sr. Maureen attended grade school at Dubuque Public School and St. Joseph�s School, both in Fall River, Mass., and St. Michael�s in Providence, R.I . She attended high school at St. Patrick�s in Providence, R.I., and St. Elizabeth�s in Allegany, NY. Shortly after graduation, she joined the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. She continued her education at St. Elizabeth Teacher�s College (now a part of St. Bonaventure University) in Allegany, NY; Barry College in Miami, FL; Nazareth College in Rochester, NY; and Mt. St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, earning a Bachelor�s in education in 1966. In 1967, she earned a Master�s in Sacred Doctrine from St. Mary�s College in Notre Dame, Indiana.
Sr. Maureen ministered for a number of years in education, serving as a teacher and principal in a number of schools, including Corpus Christi in Miami, FL; St. Francis in Triangle, VA; St. John the Baptist in West Islip, NY; St. Mary of Angels in Haddonfield, NJ; and St. Anthony Convent in Winston, CT. Sister also served the congregation in a number of capacities, including as Novice Mistress; Local Minister; Secretary to the Area Coordinator; Area Coordinator; and Regional Councilor. For the past 17 years, Sr. Maureen lived and ministered in Tampa, FL. Sr. Maureen served the poor and the marginalized for 14 years at Trinity Caf� in Tampa. In 2015, she was welcomed home by her sisters at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, NY. Sr. Maureen was a living witness to the Gospel.
Sr. Maureen was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her sisters, Pauline Gage and Kathleen Mangan, and many nieces and nephews.
A Wake Service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2015, In the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2015, in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
