Thelma E. Underwood of 213 Davis Ave, formerly of Aspen Tower, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008 at her granddaughters home. Mrs. Underwood was born on June 12, 1923 in Franklinville and was a daughter of Frederick and Florence Elmer Nelson. She married Richard D. Underwood on July 6, 1945 in Portville, he pre-deceased her on Nov. 26, 1994. Mrs. Underwood was a 1940 graduate of Portville High School. In 1942 she graduated from Dunkirk Business School. Mrs. Underwood worked at the Olean General Hospital from 1942-1945. She worked at the Hinsdale Central School in the cafeteria from 1958 until her retirement in June of 1983. Mrs. Underwood owned and operated out of her home a cake decorating business. She also, out of her home, owned and operated Grammie's Hobby Nook. Mrs. Underwood moved to Lansdale Pa. where she lived for 18 years. While in Lansdale she worked for Ladie & Friends Company assembling & dressing dolls for two years. She returned to Olean in 2002. Mrs. Underwood was a member of the Fay Hollow Sunshine, Hinsdale Busyette's Crafts Club and was a fifty plus year member of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church and there Women's Society, where was a past president. She also served on the Ad Board of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church, As President of the Hinsdale Busyette's, and the Schwenckfeld Manor Craft Club in Lansdale, PA, and was a past member of the Hinsdale Guy's and Gals. Mrs. Underwoood was a leader for the Hinsdale Blue-Birds and Campfire Girls for 7 years. Most of all she loved her family & enjoyed spending time with them. Surviving Mrs. Underwoood are a daughter, Linda Lea Underwood of Olean; two granddaughters, Amy R. Reid of Olean and Heidi (Steve) Downey of Langhorne, PA; a grandson, Dr. Wade (Kimberly) Dehnkamp of Warrington, Pa.; great granddaughters, Roselynn Reid of Olean and Kaitlyn Dehnkamp of Warrington, PA; a great grandson, Ayden Dehnkamp of Warrington, Pa.; nephews, Fred (Veronica) Barber of Cuba, Dennis (Pat) Roulo of Portville, John (Kathy) Sprague of Brocton, Harold Blauvelt of Olean Ron Sampson of Plymouth, NY and Nick Poperenchney of Boothwyn, Pa.; nieces: Darlene (Harry) Manroe of Olean, Cheryl (Dan) Stone of Florida, Marcia (Larry) Mitchell of Daytona Beach, Fl, Patricia (John) Klebba of Maarriotsville, MD., Judy Nelson of Canterbury, NH, and Lettie Nelson of Hamilton, N.Y.; several great nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. Mrs. Underwood was pre-deceased by a grandson, Bernard Reid; three sisters, Arlene Barber, Aleta Sprague and June Roulo; a brother, Elmer Nelson; three nieces, Wanda Sampson, Roberta Poperenchney and Betty Blauvelt; and two nephews, Maurice Nelson and Gary Nelson. Friends will be received on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, from 7-9 P.M. in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc, #646 E. State Street, Olean. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. in the Hinsdale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Carl Schultz, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Franklinville.
