Obituary of Jack P. Swetland

Jack P. Swetland of 433 Genesee Street, Apt. 4, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2008 at his home. Mr. Swetland was born on April 27, 1934 in Olean and was a son of Richard and Olga Sahler Swetland. He was formerly married to Sally Bearfield. Mr. Swetland attended St. Mary's Academy and Olean High School. He served in the US Air Force from 1951 until his retirement 20 years later in 1972 from Longley Air Force Base. During that time he served in the Korean Conflict in Osex Air Force Base in Korea in 1951 & 1952 and the Viet Nam war at Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base and in the Viet Nam from 1967 to 1968 and Laon Air Force Base in France from 1957 to 1960. He was a radio operator and a personnel technician and retired as a Tech/Sgt. Mr. Swetland was also employed as a courier for MDS Labs in Olean. Mr. Swetland was an active member of the Olean VFW and the Olean American Legion. Mr. Swetland is survived by seven children, Jack (Val) Swetland of Belmont, Debra (Joseph) Baire of Olean, Gary Swetland of Cuba, Patricia (Donald) Bland of Sherrodsville, Ohio, Michael Swetland of Hinsdale, Laura (Thomas) Rogers of Allegany, and Susan Giardini of Olean; 13 grandchildren; four step grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Mr. Swetland was pre-deceased by a brother, Richard J. Swetland. Friends will be received on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, Olean, where funeral and committal services will be held on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. The Rev. Gregory J. Dobson, Pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor with full Military Honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion Post 892. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Olean General Hospital Foundation for the Ladies auxillary 515 Main Street, Olean, New York 14760.
